Empowering Women Through Carpet Weaving: WCBDO Successfully Concludes 10-Month Training Project in Kabul

The Women’s Capacity Building and Development Organization (WCBDO), with generous support from UN Women, has successfully completed a ten-month carpet weaving training program in PD#5 of Kabul City on November 7, 2025.

This project was designed to help women gain practical skills, improve literacy, and strengthen their role in the local economy. Over 56 women from different backgrounds including urban residents and returnees took part in the training and learned valuable skills that will help them build sustainable livelihoods.

Throughout the program, participants received training in traditional carpet weaving, small business management, health, literacy, and personal and environmental hygiene. The main goal was not only to teach technical skills but also to build confidence, independence, and economic self-sufficiency among women.

By combining theory with hands-on practice, the project helped women gain both professional and life skills. Many of the trainees have already started producing and selling handmade carpets in local markets, forming small groups to continue their work and earn a steady income.

Participants shared that the program had a major impact on their lives—helping them to become more confident, aware, and financially independent.

A closing ceremony was held with the participation of representatives from UN Women, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, local officials, and community activists. Speakers appreciated the achievements of the program and highlighted the importance of continuing similar initiatives that support women’s economic empowerment and contribute to Afghanistan’s recovery.

Inspired by the success of this project, the Women’s Capacity Building and Development Organization (WCBDO) remains committed to designing and implementing more programs that empower women, improve family livelihoods, promote health awareness, and preserve traditional Afghan crafts across the country.
