With support from UN Women, WCBDO is proud to announce the graduation of 28 female beneficiaries from a comprehensive three-month carpet weaving training program in District 5 of Kabul.
The graduation ceremony was held in the presence of representatives from UN Women, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Economy, the Afghan Women’s Network, women-led organizations, local carpet business owners, community members, and WCBDO’s board and staff.
Empowering Women Beyond Carpet Weaving
In addition to learning traditional carpet weaving techniques, participants received training in:
Small Business Management – equipping them to find customers locally and online, and manage their sales.
• Health & Safety – covering essential practices such as using masks and maintaining a safe work environment, particularly for home-based weavers.
• Literacy & Numeracy – helping women with limited education develop basic reading, writing, and accounting skills to manage their future businesses effectively.
Building Sustainable Livelihoods
During the program, women were introduced to carpet companies, traders, and associations, opening pathways for future sales and business partnerships.
At the end of the training, WCBDO provided the participants with:
• carpet loom
• Raw materials
• Essential tools
Carpet loom, Raw Materials and Essential tools were provided to the graduated Women and Youth students.
This startup support enables them to continue weaving carpets from home, contributing to their household income and financial independence.
Preserving Culture, Creating Opportunity
Carpet weaving is a deeply rooted tradition in Afghanistan, with cultural and economic significance. These graduates are now prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities by producing and selling authentic handmade Afghan carpets.
The remaining 28 women in the second phase of the program will complete their training and graduate after the next three-month cycle.
